We now have less than a month before we leave. Our families don’t know we’re going. I signed on knowing that was a condition. I also signed on knowing my car was going in the shop and taking all my money with it. I knew this. I still signed on for the noodle-leg excursion. One American on his own in a foreign country is a little scary. One American and his less-than-perfectly-sane aunt traveling the UK and Europe together… well, that sounds like a reasonable plan, right?
I did mention the whole less-than-perfectly-sane bit, yes?
I asked Jake about a bunch of options for support on our adventure. I have a small business, but I have to shut it down for the time I’m gone. I did not have a vacation in my budget for this year. One of the options I suggested was getting a travel store to sponsor us. He didn’t like that idea. Too corporate, maybe.
The fact that I really can’t afford this right now, is probably the only reason he agreed that I could go along. He wants the uncertainty. The unknown. The whole adventure. Naive? Perhaps. But no great adventure is complete without a little uncertainty.
After a few other possibilities, I finally found something he likes. Amazon has a donation/payment system in place. I don’t like paypal. I don’t really trust them. I do trust Amazon. I don’t know anyone who doesn’t trust Amazon. So, I set up an Amazon Honor Pay account for us. This is the logo thingy:
I guess I’ll have to put that on a separate page, or add it to the bottom on every post. I’m not sure yet.
I considered BusAbout passes. I checked their site. They’re only around 250GBP or about $500. I thought that sounded like it was worth every penny, but that’s way more than we can afford and I’m not sure we could make their schedule.
The Eurail Global Pass sounds perfect for us, but they’re $675 each. We’re trying to save what we have for our tickets home.
You trust Amazon, right? I know you want to see us make complete idiots of ourselves in many other countries, right? Possibly even post videos on YouTube if we figure out how with the cheap cameras we have – does either of them even do sound? Mine doesn’t.
So, whether you’d like to help because you support our effort, or despite your belief that we should have known better, we’re okay with it.
